The foundation

Stiftung Luftbrückendank (Airlift Gratitude Foundation) was set up in 1959 by Willy Brandt on the 10th anniversary of the Blockade

and the Berlin Airlift of 1948/49 to express Berlin’s gratitude to the countries that carried out this operation. A call for donations raised

around 1.6 million deutschmarks from the people of Berlin; the interest from the foundation’s endowment provided financial support to

the families of the 78 men who lost their lives in the Airlift. Today the foundation funds a wide variety of youth and cultural projects

dealing with the Airlift and the Berlin Blockade. Preference is given to proposals that involve young people and young adults from the

United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
